Shut Up And Listen

Posted: May 8, 2012 in Uncategorized

This post isn’t about fat loss, it’s about an attitude and a choice.

To lead, a person must first be led and to inform a person must first be informed. The problem comes when people want the rights without the responsibility.

Why this post?

This isn’t brought about by a stubborn client or anything like that. It’s brought about by me running out of things to blog about.. and I’m faced with two options.

1. Say I’m tired of blogging, blogging isn’t for me, I don’t have time to blog or any other of a number of possible excuses.

2. Admit that I have blogged, taught, coached, written a lot lately and that I need to be a student, so that I can continue to grow as a trainer.

If I don’t accept that, I can claim to be an expert, say I have nothing more to learn that I’m at the top of my game blah blah, blah. Alternatively I can keep learning, get consistently better and ultimately achieve more for myself and my clients.

I notice that this attitude makes a massive difference among my clients too. I always know when someone’s going to make some real changes to their body. I always know because they are humble, they listen well and they don’t try to show off in group training.

I’ve had showoff clients, they come and go… and I’m honestly probably not going to remember them in five years. On the other hand I have had clients come and put in the work, they’ve  had their egos broken down when they find out how much they can ‘really’ squat and they’ve come back. They’ve listened when I’ve busted their balls about not sticking to their diets and because of this they have made some astonishing differences to their bodies.(BTW well done to these clients ;P)

This post is inspired by a blog post here: http://thebacklight.com/how-to-never-run-out-things-blog-about/

So here’s the take home of this message.

After being somewhat drained by The Fat Loss Handbook project. I’m now going to be reading and studying lots more now to bring my clients and readers very best information.

Emily’s Back!

Posted: April 12, 2012 in Uncategorized

And back on track for her fat loss goals.

For those following her progress, she’s been unable to train with me or follow her previous programme for several weeks – She’s now back and hard at work and thriving in a predominately male group.. which isn’t easy here lol!

Having lost 10 lbs in 4 weeks before her break she is picking up where she left off. Game on!

In fat loss, there are a few things that are regarded as important. Diet is one, Exercise is another and for those ‘in the know’ Resistance Training is the last of the big three, but why is it that some don’t do any of these to a significant degree and still remain fairly slim?

Here is short section from ‘The Fat Loss Handbook’ (Getting lazy with this blogging stuff now right? lol)

The N.E.A.T way to enhance fat loss

Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis is a term that describes energy expenditure that is not resulting from TEF or exercise, it is the energy that we expend from living our lives. In previous chapters you have learned how to factor in your activity level to work out how many calories you burn in a day, you know that being more active helps you to burn more calories and lose fat faster but how do we become more active?

Our lives are far less physically demanding than previous generations, we have washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, elevators, escalators, improved public transport and many other things that take a lot of the physical work out of our lives, these luxuries allow us to be productive without burning calories.

In this book I state that diets are necessary for effective, measurable fat loss and that lifestyle changes are rarely enough but N.E.A.T is one factor that is separate to diet and exercise regimes and highly affected by your lifestyle.

great way to increase calorie expenditure is to live life the old fashioned way, or at least in part, you may find this saves a considerable amount of money as well as aiding fat loss.

  • If you live within a few miles of your place of work, try cycling to and from work. A bicycle will pay for itself quickly by reducing the amount of money spent on petrol or diesel and cycling a few miles each day can be enough to increase your activity up from low to moderate, or moderate to high. Same goes for public transport, use it but don’t abuse it.
  • Try washing clothes by hand, many won’t have time for this one but if you have a job that doesn’t take up much of your time or if you are a full time parent you may find that this is a great way to save money while burning off some more calories.
  • If you work on an upper floor and routinely take the elevator to get from floor to floor, why not take the stairs for an easy way to increase your calorie expenditure.
  • Unless you have a catering business or a very large family, you have no business owning a dishwasher.
  • Play sports, play with the kids, there’s no age limit to fun. Can you remember the last time you ran, played sports?

These suggestions may sounds inconvenient but all aid in increasing your activity level, you needn’t use all of them but adjusting your lifestyle to be more active will pay off in many ways.

The lesson to take from this is that what you do makes you who you are, are you going to sit around waiting for fat loss to happen or are you going to get up off your ass and make it happen. You can burn off body fat with productive activities. If you need an excuse to paint the house, spend a day out with a friends or family or run errands then make fat loss your motive, it’s certainly more fun than the treadmill :P

Up off my ass

Posted: March 28, 2012 in Uncategorized

The last two weeks I’ve put up no posts, I’ve recovered well from my recent injury but I’ve been lacking my usual fire for this despite sleeping more, keeping up training and going about things as normal… AND the weather’s been great all week. Honestly, I don’t know what’s up.. BUT it’s back to business.

The book is late..  admittedly I underestimated the time it would take for this project but I’m not too crushed by that. The front cover’s looking good and I’ve got the back cover being sorted now, I’ve got no expected date right now as I’ve just been informed that deliveries into the UK are taking a while (US printer) but I’ll be getting some in for sale from the site and they will be available on amazon shortly after that.

Emily has taken a break from her diet as due to personal reasons she has not been able to attend her sessions lately but she will be back on track soon. For those following her progress, she lost 10lbs in her first month and she intends to continue in this manner as soon as she can.

I will also be trialing a bootcamp soon on Lowestoft Beach, taking advantage of the warmer weather. I am very interested to hear any thoughts on this. Leave a comment if there’s anything you’d love to see in a bootcamp session.

Also, if there are any topics you’d like covered in this blog, leave me a comment telling me what.

My Year

Posted: March 12, 2012 in Uncategorized

Yesterday I turned 22, just writing that  makes me feel older, another year gone already.

I often share the stories of clients who train with me and achieve their goals, .. this year I didn’t achieve all of my goals.. I wish I did but I didn’t, but here’s what I did do.

The Blog

This time last year, there was no TMW Fitness blog. It started in May last year and it’s now grown to be a resource that I can refer people to knowing that they can find the information they need. Posts on this blog have also been developed into fitness articles elsewhere on the web. See here: http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Theo_M_Whittington

The Book

I know I said the 10th right? I’ve been working my ass off to get this out but unfortunately I ran out of hours and the cover designs weren’t up to scratch. I have contacted another book cover designer and hope to have everything up and running soon. I’d like to say it’ll be 7 days but after a tough couple of weeks I’m going to take it easy this week and let the designer do his thing and use this week for a couple of little enhancements I wouldn’t have otherwise had time for.

Seeing this now as an almost complete product, I’m really excited to bring this to the world of weight loss book and hear what you all think.

My transformation

Muscle gain while significant is not overly apparent as I’m actually lighter now than I was then but my body fat set point has dropped from over 15% to below 10% .

I feel I have developed greatly as a personal trainer too and am proud of the progress made by all of my clients.

I didn’t achieve everything I set out, but it’s been a pretty good year for me.
